20 Students of Kumasi Secondary Technical hospitalised after fire outbreak

Twenty Female students of the Kumasi Secondary Technical School (KSTS) sustained various body injuries whilst running for their lives from their dormitory following a fire outbreak.
The students were said to be asleep on Wednesday dawn around 3:15am when a ferocious inferno started at the girl’s dormitory, sparking fear and panic among the young ladies.
There were wild shouts for help from all directions of the dormitory by the female students who were eager to flee from harm’s path in order to save their precious lives.
The ensuing race to save their lives caused a slight stampede, which resulted in injuries to about twenty students, who were rushed to hospital for treatment by the school authorities.
The headmaster of the school, Mr Asare Bediako Ampomah, said the fire started at the down floor of the girl’s dormitory, trapping the students who were then sleeping at the top floor.
He suspected that fire fluctuation might have started the blaze, noting that thick smoke started emanating from one of the storerooms in the girl’s dormitory and was followed by a ferocious fire.
Mr Ampomah also noted that items such as textbooks, chop boxes, which were laden with provisions, money and clothes of some of the students got burnt by the fire.
He said some of the school’s staff on campus at the time managed to battle the inferno with fire extinguishers before fire fighters were eventually called to extinguish the blaze.
Mr Ampomah lamented that the fire outbreak would have negative effect on teaching and learning in the school as most of the students, notably those in their final year, had lost their textbooks through the blaze.
He expressed concern about an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) sub-station stationed right on the KSTS campus, saying that the sub-station posed great danger to the students and teachers.
