The
rainstorm last Thursday lasted for about an hour is the first for the
year.
Two children
have been injured with over 900 residents displaced after torrential rainstorm
wreck havoc to residents of Yendi in the Northern Region of Ghana.
The rainstorm according to officials of the National DisasterManagement Organization (NADMO) ripped off the roofing and raised to the
ground 368 rooms in 91 houses.
Victims of
the rainstorm are temporary seeking shelter with family and friends.
Issah Salifu, one of the victims who is a teacher said, “I went to
Barclays Bank for a loan. They just started deduction six months ago. I can’t
go back to them for another loan. Where to sleep is a problem as we have been
sleeping.”
Yendi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Issah Zakaria who led a team
of NADMO officials to access the extent of damage says he is overwhelmed by the
level of the havoc the rainstorm has caused to properties.
"They
are struggling to survive. Most of them are borrowing to be able to fix their
houses. In the interim, the Assembly is working hard to come to their
aid," said Zakaria.
According to the MCE, the Assembly is constrained that is why he
is appealing to well-meaning Ghanaians and other NGO's to come to the residents
aid.
The MCE was also worried about residents use of sub-standard
building materials to construct their houses.
